Title of the Study: Integrated Pain Conditions: Exploring Clinical Psychological Correlates and Blood Markers in Individuals with Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions and Long COVID
This is a research study performed by researchers in the Kinesiology Department at Iowa State University. The purpose of this study is to improve our understanding of how chronic pain and long COVID conditions, or lack thereof, affect the relationship between biological and psychological variables. Anyone over the age of 18 years in the United States is eligible to participate, regardless of whether you have been previously diagnosed with COVID-19.
The study involves an online questionnaire and is expected to take 30-60 minutes to complete. The survey will ask about several topics including your medical history, behaviors, and physical and mental health. Some topics may lead to discomfort including sensitive or personal questions regarding your health history. Participation in all aspects of this study is voluntary, and you may skip any questions that you do not feel comfortable answering. Mental health resources will be provided at the end of the survey.
You will have the option to provide your name and contact information at the end of the survey if you are interested in participating in a second component of the study, involving a clinical psychological interview and a blood draw. However, providing your contact information and participating in the interview and blood draw is entirely optional. If you do provide your name and contact information, this information will be used to contact you about possible future participation, as well as link your survey responses with results from the interview and blood draw components. Following completion of the study, your name and contact information will be replaced with a study ID number, and your name and contact information will not be linked with your data.
Participation in this study may allow you to reflect on your health experiences and identify aspects of your health that you may discuss with your healthcare provider. Participation in this study may also allow researchers to better understand the associations between physical and mental health symptoms, identifying important connections and informing future intervention studies.
To promote privacy and confidentiality, we encourage you to use a private device in a private space while completing the survey. Your survey responses will be collected and stored on secure digital platforms. To further protect your confidentiality, we will not report the following: data collection location or any individual-level results (e.g., no case studies or exact ages, genders, or race/ethnicities). Your study records may be used for other research studies. These studies may be similar to this study or completely different. We will make sure that your identity cannot be linked to the information we share. We will not ask you for additional permission before sharing the information. Your study records may be shared with others at Iowa State University including auditing departments of Iowa State University, and the Institutional Review Board (a committee that reviews and approves human subject research studies), which may inspect and/or copy study records that may contain private information for quality assurance and data analysis.
At the completion of the survey, you will have the option to click on a separate link to provide your name and email address for entry into a drawing for one of 50, $10 Amazon gift cards that will be emailed to participants following completion of the study. We use a separate link so that information needed for the gift card drawing will never be linked to survey responses. You do not have to answer every question to participate in the drawing.
